Sulfur Recovery – Claus & Tail Gas Treating

GT-Claus is a “modified Claus” technology. GTC Technology, in alliance with Rameshni and Associates (RATE) and Shandong Sunway, is able to offer highly customized solutions for sulfur recovery across a range of industries and streams recovering sulfur in the 3 – 2,500 Ton/day range.

Process Description

The GT-Claus modified Claus process has a thermal (combustion) section that partially converts H2S to SO2, followed by combustion and catalytic sections that react the H2S and SO2 to recover sulfur. The gas exits the thermal section, enters a waste heat boiler where heat is recovered. Sulfur is then condensed and the unreacted gases are reheated before introduction to a Claus catalyst bed. Following the catalyst bed, the sulfur is again condensed out before repeating the reheat, catalyst bed stages again. Overall sulfur recovery depends on the number of stages, and can reach 98%. GTC can customize the configuration fo the GT-Claus unit depending on the acid gas concentration, ammonia content, etc.

To improve the overall sulfur recovery above 70%, the sulfur must be condensed after the thermal section and each catalytic section. The process gases are reheated after each condensation step. GTC also offers proprietary reheating technology. Heat recovery will improve overall operating economics.

The tail gas can be sent to an incinerator, depending on the overall sulfur recovery efficiency regulation. A variety of tail-gas treating options are available, including caustic treating, hydrogenation followed by a tail-gas amine unit. Liquid sulfur degassing technology, for liquid sulfur also is available.

There are many nuances to the design and operation of a reliable “modified Claus” process. This is driven by the complexity of the combustion and catalytic reactions, the unique properties of sulfur, and the corrosion risk inherent to this system. GTC offers design and operations experience that is unique in the industry.
